The Place

New Orleans is one of the world's most fascinating cities. Steeped in a history of influences from Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and beyond, it's home to a truly unique melting pot of culture, food and music. In 2005, New Orleans was catastrophically impacted "the worst engineering disaster" when the Federal levee system failed during Hurricane Katrina. By the time the hurricane approached the city at the end of August 2005, most residents had evacuated. As the hurricane passed through the Gulf Coast region, the city's federal flood protection system failed, resulting in the worst civil engineering disaster in American history. Floodwalls and levees failed and 80% of the city flooded. Over 1,500 people died in Louisiana and some are still unaccounted for; and many have not returned to their homes since 2005. 7 years later, the city is still struggling to restore communities and families.
